Check out the 12 Standards for English/Language Arts as established by NCTE/IRA http://www.ncte.org/standards 1. Which standard do you feel is easiest to complete in YOUR classroom? Which is hardest? Why?
Issues and Problems in English and Language Arts Instruction Expanding the Definition of Literacy - the definition of literacy has changed dramatically over the course of its history. It is critical that students learn how to learn new literacy technologies. Exploring New Instructional Practices - teachers are expected to provide new forms of literacy instruction so that students know how to locate, critically evaluate, use, and communicate through technology resources. Creating Social Learning Environments - new forms of literacy are much more contingent on social interactions with others than traditional literacies. Teachers should begin "giving students the enjoyment and pride of sometimes being their teachers' teachers" (NCTE/IRA, 1996). Technology offeres a natural setting in which students can be positioned as the experts, helping to redifine the student--teacher relationship (Bryan, 2000; Doering, 2006). Working with Diverse Learners - schools have more diverse student populations today than ever before. This cultural and linguisitic diversity creates classrooms that are richer yet more complex. Motivating Students - The more students read, the better developed their language and writing skills become. Teachers find it an oncoging challenge to motivate students to read -- either for study of for pleasure. Students rarely choose reading as a free-time activity. Teachers' Growth as Literacy Professionals - The position statement published by the International Reading Association (2007) clearly states what literacy teachers need to know about integrating technology in the curriculum. These visions will not be fully realized unless teachers receive continued and systematic professional development. http://www.reading.org/Resources/ResourcesByTopic/Technology/Overview.aspx 2.
